Starting a Tenants’ or Tenants’ and Residents’ Association

What is a Tenants’ & Residents’ Association?

It is a group of local Tenants or Tenants and Residents (T.A.R.A.) who want to work together with their Landlord, to improve their housing services. They work to represent the views and promote the interests of all Tenants and Residents within their area. They also work towards the improvement of their local environment.

Starting a Tenant and Resident Association is not as difficult as you might think. Riversmead Housing Association has some leaflets to help you.

Your Tenant and Resident Involvement Officer or your area Housing Officer will be happy to talk to you about it, they can be contacted at Riversmead Housing Association's offices on 01992 514514.

Tenants' or Tenants’ and Residents’ Association?

The difference between a Tenants’ Association and a Tenants’ and Residents’ Association is:

*A Tenants’ Association consists of Housing Association or Council Tenants.

*A Tenants’ and Residents' Association (T.A.R.A) consists of Tenants and Residents.

Residents are people who own their own home or live in a privately rented property in the area.

What can a Tenants’ Association do?

*Work with local people and organisations on ways to improve the local environment.

*Listen to local people regarding estate issues.

*Bring forward majority views

*Work toward building community spirit

*Set up a neighbourhood watch scheme

*Other local initiatives
