If you cannot pay your rent please let us know straight away so that we can give you help and advice. One of our Income Officers can make an arrangement with you to make regular repayments that you can afford, and also give advice, in confidence.
For help and advice, you can also contact the relevant Citizens Advice Bureau / Shelter - please see contact details for your area in the Housing Benefit section.
If you live in the East Herts area an Income Officer can make a direct referral to the Citizens Advice Bureaux for you. The Bureaux will then contact you with help for both paying rent and dealing with general debts. Contact our Income Management team for more information.
If rent arrears continue to increase and you have not made an arrangement with our Income Management team, court action can be taken and in extreme cases, action will be taken to repossess your home. Not only does this cause a great deal of worry to tenants but it also adds the cost of going to court onto the amount you owe.
Also, tenants who are evicted because of rent arrears may be regarded as ‘intentionally homeless’ and may not be offered another home.
